Details
This one-day workshop seeks to provide a forum for introducing and debating new research
on British armies, warfare, and military-civilian relations in the formative period between
the establishment of a British standing army and the outbreak of the French Revolutionary
Wars. In the spirit of the ‘new military history’ of recent years, the workshop will explore
the possibilities and problems inherent in integrating standard military history with political,
social, and cultural approaches. Proposals are invited on all aspects of British military life,
but papers relating to the following topics are especially encouraged: politics; the state;
combat and operations; colonial warfare; representations; veterans and pensioners; religion.
Contributors
Plenary chairs and contributors will include Prof. Laurence Brockliss, Prof. John Childs,
Prof. Stephen Conway, Dr. Bob Harris, Prof. Mark Harrison, Dr. Holger Hoock, Dr. Geoff
Hudson, and Ms. Joanna Innes. In order to facilitate discussion, all papers will be pre-
circulated and places will be limited to 40 participants. Younger scholars are actively
encouraged to participate.
